Arrowmen Give Service to Park

The Ely Echo newspaper has reported about the ongoing work of members of the Order of the Arrow to support Park Portage crews. See:

The Echo said, “the Boy Scouts of America continues to provide life changing experiences through the Order of the Arrow Wilderness Voyage and Canadian Odyssey programs at the Northern Tier High Adventure Bases based out of Ely….

“Because of the OA Wilderness Voyage program’s unique reputation of cheerful and diligent selfless service in the BWCAW, the program has developed into an international alliance with the Order of the Arrow and the Quetico Provincial Park.

“The two organizations formed the extension of the OA Wilderness Voyage program aptly named the OA Canadian Odyssey in the summer of 2009.

“In this second summer of OA Canadian Odyssey the Scouts are working on the Maria Lake to Jesse Lake Portage in the Quetico Provincial Park.”

The Order is a program reserved for honor campers who are selected by other Boy Scouts based upon criteria such who offers to help with setting up camp and who would you pick to go camping with as well as good character. The spirit of the program is embodied in a story in which a few Native Americans from neighboring bands joined an effort to help preserve their hunting lands, putting service to their people above themselves. It is called the Brotherhood of Cheerful Service.

The Ely Echo is a weekly newspaper published in Ely, Minnesota.

Reading Recommendations

Douglas Stevens says:

I have a question. I will be canoeing Quetico this summer. I want to read a good natural hisotry book on Quetico, one on geolology, one on the plants and one on the mammals of the area. Do you recommned any books?

The John B. Ridley Librarian Andrea Allison offers some suggestions and we have some too:
For plants of course the book to read is Plants of Quetico and the Ontario shield by Shan Walshe – originally published by the Quetico Foundation in 1980 and reprinted by the Friends of Quetico Park in 1998.

As for mammals: Canoe country wildlife : a field guide to the Boundary Waters and Quetico by Mark Stensaas. Duluth, MN : Pfeifer-Hamilton, 1993.

This same person also did a book on plants: Canoe country flora : plants and trees of the north woods and boundary waters. Duluth, MN : Pfeifer-Hamilton, 1996.

For geology the pickings are slim. There is the book Quetico geology published by the Quetico Foundation in 1959 but that is a bit out of date.

The books on the website: http://www.kollathstensaas.com are a good series on the “North Woods”.

We especially like “Quetico, Near to Nature’s Heart” by Jon Nelson for its review of the Ice Age legacy, history of human connection, special places and the ecology of Quetico.

You can order Plants of Quetico and Quetico, Near to Nature’s Heart by contacting us.
